Recruitment season is right around the corner, and I am so elated to be writing a blog post
for what to wear during recruitment for the second year in a row! After a little time of reflection on my second formal recruitment (last year, Fall 2018 - as a sorority woman and an upcoming college sophomore... time flies when you’re having fun), I wanted to share something that came to mind:
Your heart will be remembered more than your hair.
When thinking back on the year I went through recruitment (Fall 2017), the conversations I had and the friends I made come to memory rather than what shade of lipstick I wore on sisterhood day (don’t worry though - I have that covered too). My prayer is that this blog relieves anyone reading from feeling like you have to be picture perfect throughout the entire process, and my hope is that everyone will find their home-away-from-home!
However, with that being said, I think it is truly important to feel confident, poised, and relaxed in the clothing you choose to wear. After all, your outfit should not hold you back from having the best experience possible. Below I listed a day-by-day guide on what to wear for recruitment as well as what to wear for JSU’s Summer Social that is held for incoming freshman or anyone interested in recruitment. I also included some finishing touch items like cosmetics and accessories. I hope you enjoy reading this blog and find it helpful when choosing what to wear! :)
SUMMER SOCIAL: For many incoming college women, this is their first interaction with sorority women in
an organized setting (HOW EXCITING?!). My best suggestion for this event is to wear
something you may think to wear to a summer wedding. In the two previous years that I have been able to attend, there were lots of bright colors and floral prints.
DAY 1: The first day of recruitment at JSU is generally known as “Philanthropy Day.” Typically for this day you will receive a t-shirt or tank of some sort from Panhellenic to be worn with your choice of bottoms, shoes, and accessories. Recruitment can be a very hot time of year (especially in Alabama, whew), so shorts, skirts, and sandals are usually what everyone gravitates toward in an attempt to stay cool.
DAY 2: Things become a little less casual on Day 2 or “Sisterhood Day.” I always enjoy seeing
everyone’s selection of dresses, skirts, wedges, and small heels. Jewelry can add to any outfit. For me personally, I have to steer clear from bangles or stacks of multiple bracelets when I am in situations where I may become fidgety (lets just say my bracelets from the first night of recruitment were barely hanging on by the time I got home haha). However, if that’s not the case for you, I say go for it. I love the look of them!
DAY 3: Finally, “Preference Day” will arrive. These three days will fly by quicker than you may
think. The tone can be a little more serious than the previous parties, and with that, it is also the most formal or dressy day of recruitment. Dresses and heels are appropriate. In 2017, I wore red and white dress that looked like a mix of a flight attendant and the first lady.
BID DAY: Neutral tops and bottoms are a perfect go-to for bid day. I also advise cute yet comfortable shoes because there is always a possibility of a lot of walking (and of course running) for bid day events. You will be receiving all kinds of cute goodies from your new group of gals along with a tee or tank. (Counting. Down. The. Days. Eeekkk!)
SPECIAL TOUCHES: Water-proof mascara and a long-lasting foundation are a MUST as it will be VERY hot
and there will probably be tears of joy. Earrings, bracelets (unless you’re like me of course lol), rings, and necklaces are all fabulous additions for any occasion and can help express your personality. If you would like, bring lipstick for touch-ups before and after parties. My Rho Gamma was always so sweet to let me store it in her bag during the week. Also, your Rho Gams will typically have mints for you to eat in between parties (they are lifesavers, literally haha).
