Think about it—You’ve just graduated high school. Maybe you’re a little nervous about going to college. You’ve made the decision to go through sorority recruitment in hopes of finding a group of women that will help make your new college town feel like home. You and your besties have been stalking Instagram pages all summer, and they are also going through recruitment. When going through, there are often some common misconceptions when it comes to friends ending up in different organizations. If you’re wondering how you and your #1 gal are going to make it through recruitment week and beyond together, this post is for you!

Hey! My name is Micaela and I’m an AOII here at JSU. I’m from Lincoln, AL and I’m a Psychology major entering my junior year. I wasn’t your typical college girl that rushed her freshman year! I didn’t decide to join a sorority until my sophomore year. The best part about coming to college, even though it’s so close to my hometown, was getting to enjoy the freedom of being on my own and shaping myself into the person that I want to be in life.

Hi! My name is Madison McKinney and I’m a ZTA here at JSU! I’m a business marketing major entering into my junior year this fall! I’m from Lincoln, AL and I went through formal recruitment at the beginning of my freshman year! My favorite part about coming to college was meeting new people and gaining ~new~ freedom to figure things out for myself.
Micaela:
Getting to experience college with your best girl is something that all girls want to experience. So with that being said, I came to Jacksonville with my very best friend, Madison! Of course, I made the decision to come to JSU on my own terms but having her by my side made it so much better. Madison and I have been best friends since the start of middle school. That now makes it almost ~8~ years! We spent the better half of our youth experiencing life changing events together, so I was super excited to go through what is known as “the best four years of your life” with her! If you’ve met Madison and I, you know that we have two totally different personalities, so it’s safe to say that I knew we would end up in two different sororities. AOII and my sisters have shaped me into someone that I never thought I would become so, if I could go back and change things, I wouldn’t! Although, I was scared at first. Would things change? Would we drift apart? Would we forget about each other? The answer to these questions is NO! Over the past two years, I’ve gotten to watch the happiness that ZTA brings to Madison and I’ve been so excited for her! I love watching her thrive within her sisterhood and I’m so thankful for ZTA for helping her become who she is today! The best part about it is, through each other and Greek life, we have both mutually built friendships with people in each other’s organizations!
Madison:
Honestly, having my very best friend come to college with me was one of the best things that could have happened. Micaela and I have been best friends since middle school, and we’ve spent the majority of our years figuring life out together. College is no exception, so we became roommates our freshman year! We both value our individuality and we found our “fit” in two different organizations. I have personally found skills that I never knew I had and I’ve received from amazing sisters by being a part of Zeta Tau Alpha. I’ve also had the opportunity to watch Micaela thrive and grow in her very own sisterhood within AOII. Finding new friends and gaining new experiences can be overwhelming, especially when you’re in a new place. Having your best friend (no matter what organization they are a part of) makes everything so much sweeter.
This was intended for those of you who are having seconds thoughts about rushing due to the fact you and your best friend have two different organizations in mind! It may seem scary and impossible, but I promise you it’s not! In fact, it’s actually really good for you to have a different world outside of each other! It may take a little more effort to make time for each other if you have different schedules, but if we can do it, then I know you can!
