& They were Roommates...

Writer: AOIIAOII

When I was in high school, I thought I had it all figured out before college. EXCEPT for… my freshman roommate. I knew absolutely no one coming to JSU, and I am not exactly the most outgoing person. I ended up searching online and I found a sweet girl with “JSU 20” in her Instagram bio. So, I sent her a message just praying that she didn’t already have a roommate. She simply responded, “Well yes I have a roommate, but my best friend is still in need of one!” If only I knew in that moment what God had set out for me.

My future best friend.

I got her number, and we decided to become (sort of) random roommates. I was extremely nervous because well… you have probably all heard the “freshman roommate” horror stories. But little did I know I was about to find my go-to gal! We began hanging out during the summer as we planned our room colors, crafted wall décor, and spent endless hours shopping at TJ Maxx.

Then, move-in day came. I was so ecstatic, yet heartbroken, about moving away from my family. I had just spent 18 years with my parents and little brother, how in the world would I make it in a shoebox sized dorm with community showers?!

But once again… I hadn’t realized how big of a blessing my freshman roommate would be. Riley helped me feel right at home in our little dorm room. We ended up going through recruitment together, and both joining AOII! I knew from that day forward, I had a best friend and sister for life. Throughout my 3 years spent at JSU, my most favorite times are spent with Riley. Whether we’re watching Netflix, shopping at Target, grabbing milkshakes, stealing each other’s clothes, or making Tik Toks.. I’m always thankful to have her by my side.

In case you’re wondering if we’re still friends 3 years later, the answer is yes. We are even still roommates to this day! I am so thankful for my “forever” roommate, best friend, and future bridesmaid. My wish for all incoming freshman is that you get to experience the same amazing friendship with your first roommate.
