The REAL First Day of Recruitment

Writer: AOIIAOII

As summer is winding down, temperatures are going up (seriously we’re melting here y’all), and dorm room shopping is wrapping up, it‘s time to talk about the first day of recruitment. Yes, of course the first day is technically philanthropy day but on July 28th, you have a chance to experience the REAL first day of recruitment, the Panhellenic Summer Social!

Here’s a brief rundown of what my summer social experience was like and what you can also expect!

Meehan Hall is one of my favorite places at JSU, especially the 5th floor! There is the most gorgeous view of the football field and campus. Along with that view was another beautiful view, free chicken fingers, ha!  After enjoying a light snack and hearing from the Panhellenic team, the “rotations” began. Over the next 2 hours I spoke with at least one woman from each sorority and got to ask them questions such as: “how much are the dues?”, “how much of a time commitment will your organization be?”, “how will y’all help me to stay focused in school”, along with many more! There was even some giveaways and free items! I scored a free t-shirt, so do you really need more of a reason to go?

For me, the best part of summer social was a chance to meet a member or members from each organization in a very relaxed setting and make a few last-minute connections before actual recruitment came. I still remember every sorority woman I talked to at the Summer Social because they were all so sweet, so helpful, and so impactful on my feelings towards going through recruitment. I also remember the friends I met at the social. Little did I know the girls in my pictures would become my sisters in just a few short weeks! These are my favorite pictures to look back on because we all had no idea where our homes would be, no idea that we would be sisters for the rest of our lives, we just knew we were all going through recruitment. Between meeting the sorority women and the ladies that would be going through by my side the Summer Social made JSU feel even more like home.

But not only did the summer social ease my mind about recruitment, it eased my mom’s as well. When you attend the Social you have the option to bring a guest. This can be your mom, dad, grandma, cousin, or friend, but most people bring their moms. The sorority women did such a fantastic job of not only speaking with me, but my mom as well and answering all of her questions! Of course, recruitment is stressful for us college gals but for moms who are about to let their babies “leave the nest” it’s even more stressful and nerve wracking. (if you’re reading this go hug your mom, you’re gonna miss those hugs :)). I strongly encourage you to bring a loved one to the social so they can get a deeper understanding of sorority life. Plus, a day to dress up with your mom is always fun!

Of course, the Summer Social isn’t mandatory but c’mon, great conversation, a beautiful view, free food, and maybe some free shirts, why wouldn’t you come?

The Summer Social will be held July 28th at 3pm on the 5th Floor of Meehan Hall.
