Freshman year, first year away from home, new to college and sorority life, I had no idea who I was or what I wanted. My initial thoughts were join a sorority to make friends, make it to class and try to get good grades so my parents wouldn’t kill me. Sound familiar? I had no idea the impact that Alpha Omicron Pi would have on my life. Great friendships with some awesome women was just the beginning. God had much bigger plans for me than I could have ever imagined.
Comfort Zone… yes please! We all like to do the things in which we feel most comfortable. For me, my comfort zone was mixing in with the crowd. I always wanted to be a part of the action just not necessarily in charge of anything. This however is not the path that God had in mind for me. Through the encouragement of my sisters in AOII, I became very active in my sorority in a role that was way out of my comfort zone. During the second semester of my freshman year… Yes, FRESHMAN year I began to transition from one of the groupies to one of the leaders of the group. I have always been the girl who played sports in high school and got good grades. I participated in many clubs but was never in a leadership role. Through AOII, I was encouraged to run for office of our Leadership Council. This was WAY out of my comfort zone but it proved to be the best move for me as a sister.
Here I am now, 3 years later, the president of this incredible sorority. My journey to this office has been amazing. I was completely unprepared for what was in store for me as a leader in AOII. The opportunities that have been available to me through my various leadership roles have been an integral part of my development as a woman. I have met and worked with AOII sisters from all over the US and Canada through leadership conferences. I have been able to work on my leadership skills (which I never thought I possessed). I have been given the opportunity to represent the best sorority there is and so much more! AOII has brought out so many amazing qualities that I did not see in myself… all thanks to my sisters.
Becoming a leader early on in my journey as an AOII opened my eyes to everything that this amazing sorority has to offer. There is a place for EVERYONE, even if you are like me and are not sure of who you are just yet--- there is a place for you. The point of this blog is to bring to your attention the many things that a sorority can do for you. If you have not found yourself just yet, your sisters will see potential in you and encourage you to be the best version of yourself. If I were never encouraged by my sisters, I never would be where I am today. I am still growing and learning as the days go on and my sisters inspire me every day. I am truly amazed at the awesome God we serve. He led me to this amazing group of selfless women. Go Greek and find your place! You never know where this amazing journey will take you.
