A Mom’s Perspective of Greek Life

Writer: AOIIAOII

“Hey mom, we have a recruitment tea to go to.’’

These were the words I heard from my daughter only a few days before my first greek life experience. Having not been in a sorority in college and only getting a feel of what they are through television and movies, I had a bit of a panic attack. All of a sudden all I could hear were the words dresses, dues, and philanthropy! I had no experience with sorority life. So, Carson and I were about to take on sorority life together and I am forever thankful we did.

In August of Carson’s Freshman year, she went through sorority recruitment at Jacksonville State University. I was nervous for her, excited for her, but most importantly I wanted her to find the perfect group of ladies for HER.

After hours and hours on the phone each night during recruitment week, our family waited patiently outside on the TMB lawn on Sunday morning to see which organization would become my daughter‘s new ‘’home’’. I was still nervous and excited but relieved because I knew that wherever she was going, she was going to make a difference.

Carson ran home to Alpha Omicron Pi and the ladies of AOII quickly became her second family. She was pushed to be her best self at all times. She and her sisters have raised thousands and thousands of dollars for their community and for their philanthropy, Arthritis Research. She was selected as a freshman to be Philanthropy chair assistant, and then as a Sophomore she was selected as New Member Educator on the chapters Leader’s Council. Also, Carson has been listed on JSU’s Honor’s list every semester. She has her sisters supporting her through everything she does. She has grown so much throughout her college years and I know I have a beautiful group of ladies to thank for that. They love her, care for her, guide her and are always there to support her. When my daughter joined AOII it truly changed her for the better. She has gained her best friends, bridesmaids, and the most loving sisters at JSU.

Oh AOII, I will never be able to thank you enough for taking care of my girl the way you do but thank you so much from the bottom of my heart.
